Abraham Lincoln is Americas 16th president, he is known as one of the most influential person in history. He is also known for reuniting the United States and abolishing slavery in America.
Lincoln was in born n 1809 in Kentucky, his parents were one of the richest farmers. Till his father lost most of their property through conflicts over the ownership of the land, so they moved to Indiana in 1816. Then they moved to Illinois in 1830.
While living in Illinois he was very athletic and was pretty tall, 6’4”. At the age of 21, he moved out, and worked on a flatboat and was a partner to a small store. Lincoln was mostly self-taught or like homeschooled, he taught himself to read and write, and during his early 20s, he taught himself law. He became a successful lawyer, and married Mary Todd in 1842, and had 4 children, Lincoln was often absent, but was a good father.
One of Lincoln’s famous speech is the “House Divided” speech. Since he wanted to keep the States together, he noticed that one side of the slavery debate had to overcome the other.
After the House Divided speech, Lincoln decided run for Senator of Illinois, so then came the Lincoln-Douglas Debates in 1858. The Lincoln-Douglas debates, were a series of 7 debates against Abraham Lincoln and Steven Douglas(current senator of Illinois), and the main topic was slavery.
Lincoln represented the Republicans and Douglas represented the Democrats. Although in the end Lincoln lost, but he got national recognition because of this.
In the presidential election of 1860, he was actually nominated for the Republicans. He won the election in the end. Lincoln wasn’t against slavery nor was he with it, he said this quote: “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” – Abraham Lincoln.
After the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter, he only focused on reuniting the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, was Lincoln’s first decision to support abolition. In 1863, all the freed slaves, joined the Union side of the war.
Another famous speech by Lincoln is the Gettysburg Address, while most people would give a long speech about the war, his only lasted 3 minutes. And he was re-elected in the election of 1864. His term started in March 1865, and the Civil War ended in April 1865. But only a few days after the celebration, Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth, at the Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.
Died in April 15th, 1865, and buried in Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln is one of the most important figures American history, for reuniting America and abolishing slavery.
